Abstract
This study was to establish apparel worn by market women and heat stress implications and adaptation strategies in Ghana. The study employed a multiple case study design. The sample size of the study was thirty (30). The instruments used to amass data were an interview guide, observation and a closed-ended questionnaire. The study found that most of the market women in Ghana wore apparel that made them suffer heat stress when they returned home. The study also found that market women with no shade in Makola, Ho and Kotokraba markets in Ghana had a lot of heat stress implications, such as a rise in temperature, loss of appetite, headache, body pain, heaviness and inability to sleep at night which led to self-medication. The study, therefore, recommended that market women’s associations hold mini-conferences to educate themselves on the types of apparel to be worn during high temperatures for a better life at work and at home. The study also recommended that the market women should be educated on frequent visits to the hospital rather than self-medicate.
