Abstract |
|
Bahrain has had unique environmental challenges given its high rate of population increase and its fast growing
industries within a small land size. The main environmental challenges according to the Bahrain Supreme Council of
Environment include: sea water pollution from wastewater treatment projects, ground water pollution from sea water
intrusion and air pollution from oil refineries, aluminum manufacturing and power plants. This has had a significant impact
on marine life and the quality of life of inhabitants. Traditional solutions to these problems have proven unfeasible and
sometimes non-practical given the uniqueness of Bahrain and its environment. This paper attempts to discuss the potential
use of AI technologies for environmental applications in Bahrain and to identify major research directions in this area. It is
seen that complex environmental problems in Bahrain where traditional approaches could fail can be the subject of AI
research and technology development. |
